Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave: what they actually are

Your call Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Thread are delivery carriers. Matter is a universal label every app can read. Sources linked.

I am going to start by telling you what I am not. I am not an engineer, I do not work in this industry, and a few weeks ago I could not have told you the difference between Matter and Thread. I have owned a home for a few years and now a growing collection of smart devices to try and make my life easier, but I had been nodding along to these words without really knowing what they meant.

Old habits die hard and I did what I do best, the boring and honest thing. I went to the organizations that create these standards, the Z-Wave Alliance, the Connectivity Standards Alliance, and the Thread Group, and read what they say about their own technology. This is the plain-English version of what I found. I will link every source as I go, so if you think I got something wrong, you can check me. That is the deal.

Here is the one idea that finally made all of it click for me.

Think of it as shipping a package

Most of these names are carriers. They are how a device gets delivered, think of how UPS, FedEx, or the postal service get a box to your door. Wi-Fi is a carrier. Z-Wave is a carrier. Zigbee is a carrier. Thread is a carrier. A device gets dropped with a certain carrier and ships over it.

Matter is not a carrier. Matter is the label on the box. It is a standard way of packing and labeling that every app can read, so the contents work no matter who delivered them. Once I stopped trying to line all five up as the same kind of thing, the whole mess got simple. Four carriers, one label. Let me walk through each carrier, then the label.

Wi-Fi: the carrier you likely already have

Anything that says “no hub required” is almost always shipping over Wi-Fi, talking straight to your router like your phone does. You may already pay for this carrier through your internet provider, or you bought your own router, so there should be nothing extra to buy.

The catch is that Wi-Fi is power hungry and chatty, which is fine for a plug wired into the wall or a camera that needs the bandwidth anyway, and not great for a tiny battery sensor you want to last a year. That is not a knock, it is just what Wi-Fi is good and bad at. Big packages, great. Small frequent ones, not ideal.

Z-Wave: the carrier on its own private roads

Z-Wave is the carrier most of my own house ships on, so this is the one I knew best even before reading up.

According to the Z-Wave Alliance, the group that runs the standard, Z-Wave “operates in the sub-1GHz band” and is “impervious to interference from Wi-Fi and other wireless technologies in the 2.4-GHz range.” In shipping terms, Z-Wave drives its own private roads that nobody else uses, so it never sits in the Wi-Fi traffic jam. It also “supports full mesh networks,” meaning the trucks relay packages through each other to extend range, instead of every device needing a clear shot to one depot.

The other thing worth knowing is that Z-Wave is built around brand interoperability on purpose. The Alliance has run a certification program since 2002 to make sure certified Z-Wave products “work together with each other regardless of brand,” older gear included. Z-Wave needs its own depot, a hub that speaks Z-Wave, and it is its own club: it does not carry Zigbee or Thread.

Zigbee: Z-Wave’s cousin on the busy highway

Zigbee is the carrier behind a lot of Philips Hue bulbs and a ton of inexpensive sensors. Like Z-Wave, it is a low-power mesh where the plugged-in devices relay for the battery ones, and like Z-Wave, it needs its own depot, a hub.

The one practical difference: Zigbee drives the same crowded 2.4GHz highway as your Wi-Fi, so in a busy house it can occasionally get stuck in traffic in a way Z-Wave does not. Worth knowing that Zigbee is now stewarded by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the same group behind Matter, which is part of why the two worlds are growing closer.

Thread: the new carrier people confuse with Matter

This is where most of the online confusion comes from, so read it twice. Thread is a carrier. Matter is the label. They are not the same thing, even though they launched together and get said in the same breath.

The Thread Group describes Thread as an “open IPv6 based protocol” built for connecting low-power products around the home. In plain terms, it is a newer low-power mesh, similar in spirit to Z-Wave and Zigbee, but modern enough that there is no single depot everything funnels through.

Thread has one piece you should know about, because it trips everyone up: a Thread network needs a border router to reach the rest of your house and the internet. Think of the border router as the local post office that connects your neighborhood’s delivery network to the wider postal system. The good news is that you probably already own one without realizing it, because a lot of common devices double as Thread border routers: certain Apple HomePods and Apple TVs, newer Amazon Echos, some Google Nest Hubs, and newer SmartThings hubs. If a Thread gadget will not connect, “you do not have a border router turned on” is a very common cause.

Matter: the label every app can read

Now the label. Matter exists to kill the question “will this work with my app.”

The Connectivity Standards Alliance, which runs Matter, calls it an open protocol for interoperability, and here is the key fact: Matter is not its own carrier. It “runs over existing, familiar technologies,” specifically “Wi-Fi, Thread, and Ethernet” (plus Bluetooth just for the initial setup). So the whole sentence to memorize is this: Matter rides over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. When a box says “Matter over Thread,” that is just telling you the label (Matter) and the carrier that delivered it (Thread). Not two competing things. A label and a delivery method.

What about all the Z-Wave and Zigbee gear people already own? Straight from the CSA’s FAQ: Matter “supports bridges that allow devices using other protocols (such as Zigbee or Z-Wave) to participate in a Matter ecosystem.” A hub that already speaks those carriers can relabel the package so the rest of the house reads it as Matter. So the old stuff is not roadkill. It can be carried across.

I will add the one honest caveat I kept seeing as I read around: Matter’s early years were widely reported as rough, with finicky setup and slow device support, and it has been improving version over version since. I have not run it myself, so I am repeating what is reported, not what I lived. Take it as “promising and maturing,” not “flawless.”

So, what do you need plugged in?

Strip the names away and the shopping logic is short:

  • Wi-Fi device: nothing extra, your router is the carrier.
  • Z-Wave or Zigbee device: you need that carrier’s depot, a hub that speaks it.
  • Thread device: you need a Thread border router, the local post office, which you very likely already own inside a HomePod, an Apple TV, a newer Echo, a Nest Hub, or a newer SmartThings hub.
  • Matter is not a box you buy. It is a label that tells you the device should show up in whatever app you already use.

The mistake I was making, and the one I watch other people make, is treating these as five things to choose between. You are not picking one. A normal house ends up running three or four of these carriers at once, with a hub or two relabeling boxes, and Matter as the common label. My own place ships Z-Wave for the stuff I trust, plain Wi-Fi for the cameras, a SmartThings hub holding it together, and Google Home for voice.

How I checked this

Because I am a regular homeowner and not an expert, here is exactly where this came from, so you do not have to take my word for any of it:

If a manufacturer or one of these groups says something different from what I wrote, believe them over me and email me so I can fix it.

Did it work?

Your call, because the right mix genuinely depends on what you already own.

But the thing that worked was the mental model, and that part I will hand to anyone: stop ranking these five names against each other. Four of them are carriers, one of them is a label, and the only real question at checkout is “which carrier does this device ship on, and do I have that carrier’s depot.” Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Thread are carriers. Matter is the label that rides over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread, never over Z-Wave or Zigbee, and a hub can relabel the rest.
