What decides compatibility

• Wired backhaul between nodes is the single biggest performance factor. Wireless backhaul costs you roughly half the throughput per hop.
• Most smart devices are 2.4GHz only. Systems that force a single combined network name usually handle this fine, but some device setups still need the 5GHz band off temporarily.
• Some nodes include Thread and act as a border router, which means Matter-over-Thread devices work without a separate hub.
• Coverage claims assume open space. Plaster, brick, and foil-backed insulation all cut it sharply.
