What decides compatibility

IR controllers need line of sight and cannot read the unit's real state, so they can get out of sync with it.
Wired controllers plug into the indoor unit's control port and know the actual state. They need a supported brand and usually a panel to come off.
Confirm your exact indoor unit model is on the compatibility list. Brand-level support is not enough here.
