Temperature and humidity sensors

A temperature sensor turns a thermostat that reads one hallway into a house that knows which room is cold. They are cheap enough to buy several, and the useful ones report often enough to drive an automation rather than just log a graph.

What decides compatibility

  • Most are Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, or Bluetooth, so a hub or a bridge is normal here.
  • Reporting interval decides whether you can automate on the reading. A sensor that updates every 30 minutes cannot drive a fan.
  • Bluetooth-only sensors need something in range to relay them. That is fine next to a hub and useless in a detached garage.
  • A screen on the sensor is worth more than it sounds. It makes the reading useful without the app.

How these connect to your system

A works-with badge does not say how the device gets there, and the path changes what you get. Direct means the maker built the integration and the device's own features tend to come with it. Via Matter means the standard controls work and anything unusual about the device may not carry over. Via a hub means you need a second box, usually the maker's own, before it works at all.
