A presence sensor uses mmWave radar to detect that someone is in the room even when they are sitting still, which is the thing PIR motion sensors cannot do. That solves lights going off while you read, and it introduces a new problem: radar sees through some walls.

What decides compatibility
- Most need constant power, usually USB. These are not battery sensors, so plan for a cord.
- Radar can see into the next room or pick up a ceiling fan. Expect to spend real time on sensitivity and zone tuning.
- Nearly all are Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, or Wi-Fi with a hub in the middle. Check the radio against what you already run.
- Detection zones and distance limits vary a lot. A sensor tuned for a desk is wrong for a living room.
How these connect to your system
A works-with badge does not say how the device gets there, and the path changes what you get. Direct means the maker built the integration and the device's own features tend to come with it. Via Matter means the standard controls work and anything unusual about the device may not carry over. Via a hub means you need a second box, usually the maker's own, before it works at all.
