Security is the category where subscriptions hide most of the cost and where hub requirements bite hardest. Cameras and doorbells often store nothing without a plan, and remote lock control usually needs a hub or a bridge.

What decides compatibility
- Ask what the device does with no subscription. For many cameras the answer is live view and nothing saved.
- Locks need a hub for remote access unless they are Wi-Fi. Matter locks run over Thread, which needs a border router.
- Sensors are almost all Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Thread. If you own no hub, that is the first purchase.
- Local storage and local control decide what still works when the internet is out.
How these connect to your system
A works-with badge does not say how the device gets there, and the path changes what you get. Direct means the maker built the integration and the device's own features tend to come with it. Via Matter means the standard controls work and anything unusual about the device may not carry over. Via a hub means you need a second box, usually the maker's own, before it works at all.
