Scene controllers

A scene controller is a wall button or a small remote that sets several devices at once, like a goodnight button that turns off the lights and locks the door. It is the piece that makes a smart home usable by the people who did not build it, because it puts a real button back on the wall.

What decides compatibility

  • Most are Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Thread, so a hub is normal here rather than an exception.
  • Battery models stick anywhere and need a battery change every year or two. Wired models replace a switch and need a neutral.
  • Scene count is fixed by the hardware. If you need five scenes, a two-button controller will not get there.
  • The scenes live on your hub, not the button. Switching hubs later means rebuilding them.

How these connect to your system

A works-with badge does not say how the device gets there, and the path changes what you get. Direct means the maker built the integration and the device's own features tend to come with it. Via Matter means the standard controls work and anything unusual about the device may not carry over. Via a hub means you need a second box, usually the maker's own, before it works at all.
