A smart dimmer is a smart switch that can also set a level, which sounds simple and is where most smart lighting complaints come from. Nearly every dimmer problem traces back to the bulbs rather than the dimmer. Get the pairing right and it is the best-feeling upgrade in the house.

What decides compatibility
- The bulbs must say dimmable. Non-dimmable LEDs on a dimmer buzz, flicker, or fail early.
- Minimum load trips people up. A dimmer rated for incandescent may not see a single 6W LED as a load, so it flickers at the bottom of the range.
- Most dimmers need a neutral wire, and 3-way setups need the brand's own companion switch.
- Do not put a smart dimmer behind a smart bulb. Dimming the power to a bulb that dims itself is how you get flicker and dropouts. Use a switch, not a dimmer, in that case.
How these connect to your system
A works-with badge does not say how the device gets there, and the path changes what you get. Direct means the maker built the integration and the device's own features tend to come with it. Via Matter means the standard controls work and anything unusual about the device may not carry over. Via a hub means you need a second box, usually the maker's own, before it works at all.
