A smart dimmer replaces your wall switch, so the wiring in the box decides more than Alexa does. Most Wi-Fi and Matter dimmers need a neutral wire, which many older homes do not have in the switch box. Lutron Caseta is the common exception, and it connects to Alexa through its own hub, so the hub is part of the price.

Check these before you buy
- Open the switch box (power off at the breaker) and look for a neutral wire, usually a bundle of white wires, before you buy.
- Use dimmable LED bulbs and a dimmer rated for LED loads. Cheap LEDs can still flicker at low levels.
- A 3-way light (two switches for one light) usually needs a companion switch or remote from the same brand. Check before you buy.
