Alexa can show a leak sensor's status, and with some sensors start a routine from it, but Alexa is rarely the thing that wakes you up. The alert that reaches your phone at 2 a.m. comes from the maker's app. Wi-Fi sensors reach Alexa with no hub. Zigbee and Bluetooth sensors need the maker's hub, unless you own an Echo with a built-in Zigbee hub and the sensor is one it can pair directly, and the line under each product says which.

Check these before you buy
- Test the alert before you trust it. Touch the sensor's contacts with a wet paper towel, then time how long your phone takes to tell you and how loud it is.
- If you want Alexa to announce a leak on every Echo in the house, check that the sensor shows up as a routine trigger in the Alexa app, not just as a status tile.
- A sensor only reports the leak. Shutting the water off needs a separate shutoff valve, a much bigger purchase, and most sensors do not control one on their own.
