Smart plugs
A smart plug goes between the wall outlet and whatever you plug into it, so an ordinary lamp, fan, or coffee maker can be switched from your phone, on a schedule, or by voice. Nothing gets installed and nothing gets wired, which is why it is most people's first smart device. Wi-Fi models work on their own; Zigbee and Z-Wave models cost less by the dozen but only work if you already own a hub, the small box that relays them.

What decides compatibility
- Wi-Fi plugs need no hub. Zigbee and Z-Wave plugs do. Matter plugs work with any Matter controller you already run.
- Check the amp rating before you plug in a heater or a window AC. Most plugs are 15A, and space heaters are the usual thing that trips them.
- Plug width matters on a duplex outlet. A chunky plug can block the second socket, so look for a low-profile or side-entry body if you need both.
- Energy reporting is not universal. If you bought the plug to see what something costs to run, confirm the model reports watts, not just on and off.
How these connect to your system
A works-with badge does not say how the device gets there, and the path changes what you get. Direct means the maker built the integration and the device's own features tend to come with it. Via Matter means the standard controls work and anything unusual about the device may not carry over. Via a hub means you need a second box, usually the maker's own, before it works at all.
