Home Assistant pairs most Zigbee and Z-Wave motion sensors directly, without the maker's hub or app, which is the main reason people pick it. What it needs instead is the radio: a Zigbee radio for Zigbee sensors and a Z-Wave radio for Z-Wave sensors (usually a USB stick), and a Thread border router for Matter over Thread. Once the radio is in place, the motion goes straight to your automations with no cloud in the middle.

Check these before you buy
- Match the sensor's radio to one you own or will buy. One Zigbee radio covers most Zigbee sensors in the house, across brands.
- Some brands (Aqara is the common one) pair fine but are fussier about which Zigbee repeaters they stay connected through. Plug-in Zigbee devices near them help.
- Check the motion timeout. A sensor that waits a long time before it can report again feels slow on a hallway light.

These join Home Assistant through Matter, a shared standard, so no maker's cloud sits in the middle. The ones that use Thread also need a Thread border router, a radio built into some smart speakers and hubs.
